LONDON: Malala Yousafzai, the teenager shot by the Taliban for promoting girls' education, will make his first public speech for his 16th birthday in New York, the office of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Britain announced on Friday.
She will speak at the United Nations, July 12, Brown said, speaking in his capacity as special envoy of the United Nations Global Education.
Malala was shot at point blank range by a gunman Taliban as his school bus traveled through Pakistan Swat Valley, on October 9 last year, was flown to Britain for surgery on his wounds to the head and, once she had recovered enough, he went back to school in Birmingham, central England last month.
"Malala is a true inspiration and a beacon for the education of girls around the world," Brown said.
"I am full of admiration for his courage and determination in the journey you are on, and I'm sure she can become a true leader in the campaign for a school place for every girl - and every boy."
Malala has become a symbol of the global campaign for the right of girls to education and has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Peace this year.
About 4,000 young people should be present for his speech debut. His self-penned life story will be released later this year in a deal reportedly worth about three million dollars.
