Two more cardiac patients die in Lahore
LAHORE: After a lull of 24-hours, two more cardiac patients affected by spurious medicines died at the Services Hospital on Saturday.
Hospital officials said a 55-year-old patient, Ghulam Ali, was brought to the health facility following reaction from spurious medicines free given at Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC). He was a resident of Kasur.
Another cardiac patient, Ms Shahida, 60, also died at the same hospital. She was a resident of Rang Mehal, Lahore.
On February 3, the Punjab health department had claimed that no death from medicines reaction was reported during last 24-hours as the better treatment was being given to over 300 affected patients still admitted to various hospitals.

لاہور… دواؤں کے ري ايکشن سے لاہور ميں آج مزيد دو خواتين دم توڑ گئيں، محکمہ صحت کے مطابق دواؤں کے ري ايکشن سے جاں بحق ہونے والوں کي تعداد 115 ہوگئي. دواؤں کے ري ايکشن سے جاں بحق ہونے والي 55سالہ بلقيس جناح اسپتال اور 67 سالہ ريحانہ سروسز اسپتال ميں زيرعلاج تھيں،دونوں دل کے امراض ميں مبتلا ہونے کي وجہ سے پنجاب انسٹي ٹيوٹ آف کارڈيالوجي کي دوا استعمال کرتے تھے. دوسري جانب لاہور ہائي کورٹ ميں پي آئي سي ادويات کے ري ايکشن سے ہلاکتوں کے ذمہ داروں کے تعين کيلئے دائر درخواست کي سماعت کے دوران عدالت نے دور دراز علاقوں ميں ادويات استعمال کرنے والے مريضوں کے اعدادوشمار طلب کر لئے، درخواست گذار کا موقف ہے کہ انتظاميہ صرف اشہتار دے کر بري الذمہ نہيں ہو سکتي، ذمہ داروں کا تعين کيا جائے، تاہم ہائي کورٹ کا کہنا تھا کہ ذمہ داروں کے تعين سے پہلے ضروري ہے کہ مريضوں کي جان بچائي جائے.

PM Gilani to Qatar to discuss Afghan peace
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani heads to Qatar on Monday to discuss Afghan peace efforts in the ultra-rich Gulf state where the Taliban and US officials have begun preliminary contacts.
Islamabad has officially billed Gilani's three-day visit to Qatar as an opportunity to boost ties and maximise trade.
"He will meet among others the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani," foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said.
"The prime minister's visit is aimed at opening new vistas for enhanced mutual cooperation and activating the existing structured mechanisms and institutional linkages," he added.
"There are certain ideas and suggestions on Afghan reconciliation and when Prime Minister Gilani meets Qatar's leadership, these will certainly come under discussion," a senior Pakistani official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
"The Americans have been briefing us on all developments aimed at pushing forward the peace process in Afghanistan and we have clearly told them that Islamabad strictly adheres to a policy of non-interference," he added.
Asked how Pakistan viewed the Taliban's office in Qatar, the official said: "now they have an address and all those wanting peace can have a contact."
APP adds: Prime Minister Gilani is arriving here on a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening ties with the Gulf state in multiple areas including import of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to meet the country's energy demands.
He will also discuss with the Qatari leadership the issue of finalization of transnational formalities to import LNG at the earliest, a Foreign Office official said.
Pakistan is interested in importing 500 million cubic feet per day of LNG from Qatar that produces 77 million tonnes per annum of LNG. The imported LNG will be initially provided to the power houses in the country to generate 2,500 megawatt electricity.
The two governments are likely to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and Qatar's Ministry of Energy.
The official said the prime minister will take up the matter of absorbing Pakistani skilled labour in Qatar. The demand of two million work force is anticipated for Qatar's various infrastructure projects for holding FIFA 2022 World Cup in Doha, he said.
Gilani will hold separate meetings with the Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Diar Real Estate Investors and the representatives of Qatari Business Association.
He will address the Pakistani community living in Qatar and attend a prize distribution ceremony at Pakistan Education Centre. About 87,000 Pakistanis comprise 33 percent of the Qatar's population.
Pakistan's exports to Qatar mainly comprise food and agriculture products dominated by rice and meat, while the imports are petrochemicals. The remittances from Qatar increased by US $ 354 million in 2010 as compared to US $ 339.51 million in 2009.
Pakistan offers one seat each in M.B.B.S, B.D.S (Dentistry), B.Sc (engineering) and B.Pharmacy to Qatari students annually under Technical Assistance Programme.

Couple brutally tortures domestic aide in Lahore
LAHORE: A couple in Sanpura area of Lahore brutally tortured a nine-year-old child who was working as a domestic helper for them, Geo News reported Monday. Police has arrested the couple and sent the child to hospital for medico-legal procedure.
According to details, residents of the area found nine-year-old Waseem at roadside shivering with cold and pain. Upon asking, he told that he was the resident of Larkana and was working in Farhan’s house as domestic aide.
Waseem told that Farhan and his wife Subhana allegedly tortured him due to which his face and other body parts swelled.
Police arrested the couple and sent the child to the hospital for his medical report.

لاہور… لاہور کے علاقے سن پورہ ميں مالکان نے نو سالہ گھريلو ملازم کو وحشيانہ تشدد کا نشانہ بنا ڈالا،،پوليس نے کاروائي کرتے ہوئے مالک مکان کو حراست ميں لے ليا. لاہور کے علاقہ وسن پورہ چوک ناخدا پر ايک لاوارث نو سالہ لڑکا زخمي حالت ميں سڑک کے کنارے سردي سے کانپتے ہوئے ديکھا گيا. محلے داروں نے گھريلو ملازم نو سالہ وسيم سے تفصيلات پوچھي تو پتہ چلا کہ زخمي وسيم پر گھر کے مالک فرحان اور اس کي بيوي سبحانہ نے وحشيانہ تشدد کيا ہے جس سے اس کے چہرے،ہاتھوں اور ٹانگوں پر زخم آئے اور وہ بري طرح سوجھ گئے.محلے داروں نے جيو نيوز کو اطلاع دي تو نوسالہ وسيم نے بتايا کہ وہ لاڑکانہ رہنے والا ہے اور ايک سال سے فرحان کے گھر ميں ملازم ہے.وسيم نے بتايا کہ فرحان اور اس کي بيوي نے کام نہ کرنے کا بہانہ بنا کر اس پر وحشيانہ تشدد کيا ہے.پوليس نے کاروائي کرتے ہوئے وسيم پر تشدد کے الزام ميں ملزم فرحان کو گرفتار کرليا اور تھانے لے گئي.زخمي وسيم کو کو ميڈيکل رپورٹ کے ليے اسپتال بھجوا بھجوا ديا گيا.

50 trapped under debris after boiler explosion
LAHORE: At least 50 people were feared trapped under rubble of a three-storey building of a pharmaceutical company that collapsed due to a boiler explosion, Geo News reported.
Three houses alongside the building also razed to the ground.
According to the details, two dead bodies and five injured people have been pulled out and shifted to the hospital. The rescue workers and people were trying to remove the debris.
The factory watchman told that at least 17 workers were inside the factory when it collapsed.

لاہور:فيکٹري کا بوائلر پھٹنے سے عمارت گرگئي،50افراد دب گئے
لاہور… لاہور ميں ملتان روڈ پر فيکٹري کي عمارت گرنے سے 50 سے زائد افراد ملبے تلے دبے گئے،خاتون سميت 5 افراد کو ملبے سے نکال ليا گيا. لاہور ميں ملتان روڈ پر کھاڑک نالے کے قريب بوائلرپھٹنے سے نہ صرف فيکٹري کي عمارت گر گئي بلکہ اس سے ملحقہ تين گھر بھي زميں بوس ہو گئے ،عمارت گرنے کي اطلاع ملتے ہي امدادي ٹيميں موقع پر پہنچ گئيں.ريسکيو ذرائع کے مطابق عمارت گرنے سے 50 سے زائد افراد ملبے تلے دب گئے ہيں عمارت کے ملبے سے ايک لڑکي سميت 5 افراد کو نکال ليا گيا ہے.فيکٹري کے چوکيدار کا کہنا ہے کہ عمارت ميں17افراد موجود تھے. علاقے کي تنگ گلياں ہونے کے باعث امدادي کارروائيوں ميں شديد دشواري کا سامنا ہے تاہم ملبے تلے دبے افراد کو نکالنے کے ليے امدادي کارروائياں جاري ہيں.گرنے والي فيکٹري کي عمارت 3 منزلہ تھي جس ميں دوايات تيار کي جارہي تھي.

Snow blocks roads in parts of highlands
ABBOTTABAD: Heavy snowfall in Galiyat, Abbottabad, and Murree Hills has cut off many road-links here, Geo News reported.
According to details, work to reopen Murree Road was underway.
On top of bone-marrow-freezing temperature, consumers, already confined to their homes, were hit hard by low gas pressure and frequent power breakdowns.
In Abbottabad the mercury dropped due to continuous snowfall while in the Galiyat it was way below the freezing point.
A number of link roads were also reported to have been impassable for sometime now.
Though, there has been a letup in precipitation but the glacial winds are still deep-freezing the cloudy highlands.
Other frigid zones of the country are also facing subzero temperatures.

Toxic food claims four lives
KARACHI: Four people including a woman died after taking poisonous food in Sohrab Goth area of the metropolis, Geo News reported.
According to police sources, 11 people including two women were shifted to hospital after they took poisonous food. Two of them including a woman died during treatment.
Medical treatment is being provided to nine others.

SC deadline on 'by-polls legal cover' ends today
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan’s deadline regarding legality of by-elections is ending today (Monday), Geo News reported.
According to details the fate of 28 parliamentarians hangs in balance as they would be rendered disqualified if government failed to have the 20th Constitutional amendment pass both Upper and Lower Houses.
The Supreme Court will resume hearing today (Monday) on the petition filed by Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan on fake electoral lists of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
A four-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, will hear the case. Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani are other members of the bench.

اسلام آباد…سپريم کورٹ کي جانب سے حکومت کو ضمني انتخابات کو قانوني تحفظ دينے کي ڈيڈ لائن آج ختم ہورہي ہے.پارليمنٹ کے دونوں ايوان20 ويں آئيني ترميم منظور نہ کرسکے تو قومي اور صوبائي اسمبليوں کے 28 ارکان نااہل ہوجائيں گے.چيف جسٹس افتخارچوہدري کي سربراہي ميں چار رکني بنچ آج بوگس اندراج سے پاک ووٹرز لسٹوں کي تياري کے کيس کي سماعت کرے گا.سپريم کورٹ نے گزشتہ سماعت پر موجودہ ووٹرلسٹوں پرضمني انتخابات کا عمل روک ديا تھا جب کہ نامکمل اليکشن کميشن کے تحت ہونے والے 28 ضمني انتخابات کي آئيني حيثيت پرايک بار پھر مہلت دي تھي جو آج ختم ہورہي ہے.گزشتہ سماعت پر عدالت کو بتايا گيا تھا کہ نامکمل اليکشن کميشن کے تحت ضمني انتخابات کي توثيق کے ليے 20ويں آئيني ترميم کا بل قومي اسمبلي ميں پيش کردياگياہے.گزشتہ سماعت پر ہي قائمہ کميٹي قانون کي چيئرپرسن، اٹارني جنرل اور ضمني اليکشن کے کامياب اميدواروں نے عدالت سے استدعا کي تھي کہ ايک مہلت دي جائے. اس پر عدالت نے 28 ضمني اليکشنز کے نتائج کي معطلي کا حکم روکتے ہوئے قراردياکہ تھا کہ غير تصديق شدہ ووٹر لسٹوں پر ضمني اليکشن نہ کرائے جائيں.

Shahbaz surprises Services Hospital
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif Sunday paid a surprise visit at Services Hospital to see whether patient under treatment due to reaction of contaminated cardiac drugs were being given adequate treatment, Geo News reported.
A concerned Shahbaz asked patients how they were doing wishing them good health.
He directed the hospital administration to ensure best treatment for the patients free of charge.
Doctors told CM Punjab that anti-dote (Folic acid) treatment has shown excellent results.

Six injured in Rawalpindi cylinder blast
RAWALPINDI: Six persons got injured when a gas cylinder exploded and triggered fire in a house in Rawalpindi Saturday, Geo News reported.
According to rescue sources, a gas cylinder blew up in a house that hurt six persons who were immediately shifted to the hospital for first aid. They were said to have received burn injuries and one out of six is in critical condition.
Some part of the house was also damaged as a result of blast, sources added.

راولپنڈي … راولپنڈي ميں گرجا روڈ پر ايک گھر ميں سلنڈر پھٹنے سے آگ لگ گئي جس کے نتيجے ميں 6 افراد جھلس کر زخمي ہوگئے . ريسکيو ذرائع کے مطابق سلنڈر پھٹنے سے آگ لگنے کے نتيجے ميں 6 افراد جھلس کر زخمي ہوگئے جنہيں فوري طبي امداد کيلئے اسپتال منتقل کرديا گيا . زخميوں ميں ايک خاتوں کي حالت تشويشناک بتائي جاتي ہے .. سلنڈر پھٹنے سے گھر کي عمارت کا کچھ حصہ بھي گرگيا.

Rain in parts of Karachi, Rahim Yar Khan
KARACHI: Weather turned pleasant and cold after rain in Karachi, Rahim Yar Khan, Hub and Bela on Saturday morning, Geo News reported.
According to reports, rain on early Saturday morning turned weather cold in Rahim Yar Khan while the mercury also fell in Karachi city.
Hub and Bela areas of Balochistan province also received heavy downpour after which the temperature decreased, increasing cold in the province.
PPI adds:
Pakistan Meteorological Department on Friday predicted more rain in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during next 24 hours.
According to met office, Westerly wave is affecting most parts of the country and likely to persist for 2-3 days. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, scattered rain with snowfall over the hills is expected in most parts of the province during next 24 hrs.
In Sindh, mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the province, however isolated rain may occur in Sukkar and Larkana divisions during next 24 hrs.

First Business Express reaches Karachi from Lahore
KARACHI: Pakistan's first Business train reached Karachi fifteen minutes before the scheduled time from Lahore on Saturday, Geo News reported.
As part of first private investment of millions of rupees in the ailing state railways, the Business Express reached Karachi cantt station at 9:45am, 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled time. The train left Lahore at 3.30pm on Friday for its first journey.
Thirteen carriages have been lovingly restored into a sleek sleeper to ply the 1,200 kilometres (800 miles) between Pakistan's two biggest cities, Lahore and Karachi, on an 18-hour journey that once used to take upwards of 30 hours.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said it is Pakistan's most luxurious and expensive train.
For Rs5,000 one way, or Rs9,000 return, passengers were waited on by a bevy of attentive stewards, as they settle down to watch films on flat-screen TVs or power up laptops.
The new train pulled away five minutes early and customers boarded from a brand-new business lounge at Lahore station. Decorated in tinsel, the engine then ground to a halt 10 minutes later to pick up more passengers.
Gilani congratulated staff on what he called a "deluxe" and "state of the art" service that would serve as a trail blazer for future private-public partnerships capable of turning around Pakistan's depressed economy.
"It's a big, big initiative from the private sector, which we have welcomed with open arms," Arif Azim, the chairman of Pakistan Railways, told.
Years of decline saw customers flock to airlines and luxury coaches.
Azim hopes that if the Business Express, and a similar service to be rolled out on February 20 between Lahore, the textiles centre of Faizalabad and Karachi, are a success then investors will sink millions more into saving the railways.
"The sky's the limit because we're in a pretty bad shape. We need a totally new fleet. 75 percent of our wagons can be described as vintage," he said.

کراچي… وزير اعظم سيد يوسف رضا گيلاني کي جانب سے جديد سہولتوں سے آراستہ ٹرين کا افتتاح ہونے کے بعد لاہور سے کراچي کے ليے چلنے والي پہلي بزنس ٹرين کراچي کينٹ اسٹيشن پہنچ گئي ہے. ملک ميں نجي شعبے کے تعاون سے چلائي جانے والي يہ بزنس ٹرين حيرت انگيز طور پر مقررہ وقت سے 15منٹ پہلے کراچ پہنچ گئي. ياد رہے کہ گذشتہ روز دوپہر ساڑھے تين بجے يہ ٹرين لاہور سے کراچي کے لئے روانہ ہوئي تھي اور آج صبح10بجے کراچي پہنچنا تھا. کراچي کينٹ اسٹيشن آمد پر ريلوے کے ملازمين نے پھولوں کے ہار کے ساتھ استقبال کيا. جي ايم ريلويز نے بھي ٹرين ميں لاہور سے کراچي تک سفر کيا. کراچي پہنچنے کے بعد ميڈيا سے گفتگو کرتے ہوئے انہوں نے بزنس ٹرين کے کامياب سفر پر عملے کو مبارکباد پيش کي. انہوں نے کہا کہ بزنس ٹرين آئندہ ترقي کي راہ ہموار کرے گي.

Americans in Pakistan told to avoid Efroze drugs
ISLAMABAD: The US Embassy in Islamabad has urged its employees and US nationals living in Pakistan not to purchase/consume Efroze Pharma products until WHO advises the manufacturer has addressed all the health concerns, Geo News reported.
Earlier, according to reliable reports, independent professional analysis had identified Efroze’s Isotab (isosorbide mononitrate) 20 mg tablets as having been contaminated with a drug called pyrimethamine, a common anti-malarial drug also manufactured by the same.
The harmful drug contamination has caused around 120 deaths and hundreds of hospitalizations in Pakistan.
All the mission employees and other Americans in Pakistan have been advised that any person taking Isotab 20mg tablets made by Efroze (Batch J093) should immediately stop doing so and see their health care provider.
The embassy further recommended that U.S. citizens follow WHO recommendations and consult their health care provider if they have further concerns.
The advisory also added that there is currently no evidence that other drugs by the same manufacturer or those produced by other Pakistani manufacturers are affected.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) Pakistan has suspended all Efroze products from the list of WHO drug suppliers until test results confirm these medications are not contaminated.

Rain in parts of Sindh, Balochistan
KARACHI: Weather turned pleasant and cold after rain in Karachi, Rahim Yar Khan, Hub and Bela on Saturday morning, Geo News reported.
According to reports, rain on early Saturday morning turned weather cold in Rahim Yar Khan while the mercury also fell in Karachi city.
Hub and Bela areas of Balochistan province also received heavy downpour after which the temperature decreased, increasing cold in the province.
PPI adds:
Pakistan Meteorological Department on Friday predicted more rain in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during next 24 hours.
According to met office, Westerly wave is affecting most parts of the country and likely to persist for 2-3 days. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, scattered rain with snowfall over the hills is expected in most parts of the province during next 24 hrs.
In Sindh, mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the province, however isolated rain may occur in Sukkar and Larkana divisions during next 24 hrs.

Magnitude 5.4 quake shakes Chitral
ISLAMABAD: The earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Chitral on Friday night, Geo News reported.
According to Met Office, the epicenter of the earthquake was located somewhere in the border region between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
No casualties of any kind have been reported so far.
