Australia crush India by 298 runs to sweep series
ADELAIDE: Australia took India's last four wickets on Saturday morning to crush the tourists by 298 runs in the fourth test and record a 4-0 series sweep.
India had resumed on 166 for six in their second innings chasing an improbable 500 runs for victory but their tail-end batsman lasted just 58 minutes on a hot and sunny fifth morning of the match.
The end came when spinner Nathan Lyon (4-63) dismissed Umesh Yadav caught behind for one, condemning India to a humiliating eighth successive overseas test defeat after last year's 4-0 whitewash in England.
The series defeat in England saw India relinquish the top spot in the test world rankings but they had still arrived Down Under confident they could claim a first series triumph in Australia.
It was not even close as Australia won the first test in Melbourne by 122 runs and followed that with an innings and 68-run win in Sydney and an innings and 37-run triumph in Perth.
With world class batsmen like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman all having failed to fire yet again on Friday, there was little hope of India rescuing a draw by batting through the final day at the Adelaide Oval.
Nighwatchman Ishant Sharma (2) was the first to go in the third over of the morning when he got a nick to a delivery from quick Ryan Harris and was caught behind without any addition to the overnight score.
Wriddhiman Saha, standing in as wicketkeeper for banned India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was dismissed in the next over in similar style for three.
Zaheer Khan hit a typically bullish 15 off 18 balls before swinging at a short Ben Hilfenhaus delivery and getting a thick edge to David Warner at short cover, leaving Yadav and Ravi Ashwin (15 not out) as the final partnership. (Reuters)

Siddle strikes with Tendulkar, Gambhir wickets
ADELAIDE: Australian paceman Peter Siddle rocked India's hopes of avoiding the follow-on with the big wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir on the third day of the fourth Adelaide Test on Thursday.
Siddle had Tendulkar and Gambhir dismissed to brilliant diving catches behind the wicket in the space of 10 balls to have the beleaguered tourists again under pressure.
Spinner Nathan Lyon followed up with the wicket of misfiring V.V.S. Laxman for 18 shortly before lunch to have the Australians bowling at India's lower order.
At lunch, India, chasing Australia's 604 for seven declared, were 122 for five and needing 283 more runs to avoid the follow-on, with Virat Kohli on 21 and Wriddhiman Saha on five.
Tendulkar again missed out on his 100th international century when he was dismissed for 25 inside the opening hour.
Siddle struck with the second ball of his fifth over enticing an edge off Tendulkar's bat for a diving Ricky Ponting to scoop it up low down at second slip.
Gambhir was out in Siddle's next over when he was unable to keep down a lifting delivery and was caught off the shoulder of his bat by a diving Mike Hussey at gully for 34.
The wholehearted Siddle had captured two huge wickets in 10 balls to seize the initiative for Australia. It was the third time in the series Siddle claimed Tendulkar's wicket and he had figures of 3-29 off seven overs at lunch.
Laxman's miserable series continued when he edged a bouncier Lyon delivery into the gloves of Brad Haddin. In seven innings in the series Laxman has scored just 120 runs at 17.14.

2nd Pakistan-England Test begins today
ABU DHABI: Rival captains Misbah-ul Haq and Andrew Strauss expect tough work for bowlers on a batting-friendly pitch at Abu Dhabi Stadium where the second Test starts on Wednesday.
Pakistan have edge with off-spinner Saeed Ajmal in good form, having taken a career-best 7-55 during his 10-wicket haul which helped his team win the first Test by 10 wickets in Dubai inside three days. "Ajmal got 10 wickets which created so much pressure on England so I think that is really an edge for us but at the same time I think the nature of the pitch here will make it tough to get 20 wickets," said Misbah on Tuesday.
Misbah urged the bowlers to stick to discipline and basics. "I think you have to come out hard and just bowl a disciplined line and bowl according to the weakness of the batsmen, and just try to exploit the conditions but I think it will be really really tough to get wickets here," said Misbah.
He added his team was ready for a backlash from England, who have not lost a Test series since January 2009. "There is no doubt that England, the world number one team, will try their 100 percent best and stage a strong comeback. We are ready for them," said Misbah, who has not lost a series since taking over as captain in October 2010.
Pakistan were likely to retain the winning combination, but if the pitch seems to offer initial pace they could Aizaz Cheema with Junaid Khan.
England will wait on the fitness of paceman Chris Tremlett who has a sore back. England captain Andrew Strauss agreed that the pitch looked good for batting. "At the moment it looks a very good wicket, there's no doubt about that.
"We are expecting it to be very good wicket for batting," said Strauss, whose team has not lost two Tests in a row since beaten by South Africa in July 2008. "It's a big challenge for us and one I personally really looking forward to. We clearly let ourselves down at Dubai, we got to hold up our hands and say there are no excuses for that," said Strauss who will open with Alastair Cook for the 100th time.
About his own batting form which saw him dismissed for 19 and six in the first Test, Strauss said he hopes to overcome the slump. "It's obviously disappointing and certainly not getting runs in the last game was disappointing for me but having been around the Test match scene for a while now I know form ebbs and flows and one innings can completely change both your perspective and others' perspective in how well you're playing.
"I do think I've been hitting the ball well and hopefully that means there's a nice recipe in place to go on and get a big score," said Strauss, who has scored only one hundred in the last 30 months, at Brisbane in 2010.
When asked whether Ajmal's bowling action, questioned by various quarters after the Dubai Test, could threaten the sense of harmony between the two teams, Strauss said: "Maybe, but you're not going to hear any discussion about it from us. It's not an issue for us, it's not something we're concerned about, we're far more concerned about coming onto the pitch and winning this game."
The third and final Test will be played in Dubai from February 3-7. Both teams will also play four one-day and three Twenty20 Internationals.

Clarke and Ponting flay India with double double
ADELAIDE: Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke both hit double centuries in an Adelaide Oval record partnership of 386 to drive Australia to 569 for seven at tea on the second day of the fourth test against India on Wednesday.
Clarke made 210 for his second big innings after an unbeaten 329 in the Sydney test, while Ponting, his predecessor as Australia skipper, made 221 after the pair batted through the morning session.
They were separated two balls after lunch when Clarke was bowled by Yadav and three more wickets fell before tea as the host batsmen went for their shots on a good batting wicket.
Brad Haddin opened his account with a six and had reached 23 not out at the break and will resume for the final session with fast bowler Ryan Harris, who was unbeaten on 19.
Already 3-0 down in the series after three emphatic defeats, India's bowlers had laboured on another sweltering morning as Clarke and Ponting ruthlessly, and often stylishly, drove home their advantage.
Resuming at 335-3, the Australian duo reached 400 after the first hour and in the process passed their own record partnership for Australia against India of 288, which they set in the Sydney test.
The next mark to fall was the all-time record partnership for the Adelaide Oval, which came when they exceeded the 341 that Eddie Barlow and Graeme Pollock shared in 1964.
Clarke brought up his second double century of the series 20 minutes before the break with two runs through mid-wicket, celebrating with his ritual kiss of the insignia on his helmet.
The 30-year-old took 361 minutes and 255 balls to reach the tally with another imperious display, which included 25 fours and one six.
Ponting was not far behind but was forced to wait nervously over the lunchbreak for his second double century against India at Adelaide after the 242 he hit in a losing cause in 2003-04.
The sixth double century of his career finally came courtesy of a trademark pull to midwicket for his 21st four in the 459-minute, 357-ball innings and the celebration left no doubt what it meant to the Tasmanian.
Clarke had already departed after being bowled between bat and pad by paceman Umesh Yadav, the first wicket to fall in more than three full sessions.
The 380-minute partnership was two runs short of the Australian record for a fourth-wicket partnership set by Donald Bradman and Bill Ponsford when they made 388 at Headingly in 1934.
Mike Hussey made a quickfire 25 from 33 balls before a brilliant Gautam Gambhir throw ran him out and Ponting followed soon afterwards when another pull off Zaheer Khan found Sachin Tendulkar on the mid-wicket boundary.
Spinner Ravi Ashwin's carrom ball accounted for Peter Siddle (2) giving wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, standing in for banned India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, his first test catch.

Amir Khan engagement set with US-Pakistani beauty
LONDON: British Pakistani boxing star Amir Khan is all set to get engaged with the American Pakistani student Faryal Makhdoom when he gives her the £100,000 three diamond rings on 29th January.
According to The Sun newspaper, the second generation Pakistanis will be swapping the rings in front of 1,000 people at a lavish £150,000 engagement party at Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium where rich footballers such as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Ricky Hatton, David Haye are just some of people on the guest list.
The love struck couple have strong traditional values, as Faryal, 20, said:" I'm very family oriented even though I was born and raised in New York but my grandparents are in Pakistan - and a lot of my dad's family are there."
"My parents are already treating Amir like a son," she added and that was quite apparent when the bride-to-be's father, Shaukat, and mum Zia gave the couple a BMW 750Li as a gift when the engagement was announced.
The pretty and petite Faryal - just 5ft 3in - has been bowled over by messages of support from Amir's army of fans. "I get a lot of messages from Amir's fans and quite a few say I look like Kate Middleton. That's so nice because so many people admire her and I think she's very stylish - so the comparison is really very flattering for me."
Husband-to-be Amir rushed to praise her too, in an interview with The Sun newspaper, adding: "A lot of girls have said to me, 'Your girl is beautiful' - and that's great because people can be so jealous. But Faryal is so humble. Anybody who meets her is going to fall in love with her. She's got no edge, she's just a terrific person."
Faryal will be flying to England on Friday for their engagement party and spend a week here where Amir will be taking her out to show her around Bolton.
"I'm going to introduce her to a pasty barm, fish and chips - maybe even an ice cream if she's lucky!" Amir said jokingly. "I might also try to squeeze in a Bolton match just so that she cans see the venue before the big day - and make sure she likes it."
Faryal revealed how their relationship was almost teetering on the edges initially as she had a lot of trouble understanding Amir's broad Bolton accent.
"In the beginning I really couldn't understand him. I was used to London accents and thought that's how everyone spoke in Britain. But when Amir opened his mouth it was as if he was speaking a foreign tongue - so I just used to nod, agree with whatever he was talking about and say, 'Yeah'.
"He'd say things like 'daft' and 'innit' and I had no idea what they meant. He'd say, 'Don't be daft!' - and I'd be wondering what 'daft' was supposed to be!" But she broke down the language barrier when she visited Amir's family at their home in Bolton and spent five days meeting his nieces, nephews and cousins. Speaking of the future Amir said: "I know New York is an amazing city but our future lies in Bolton - she can't wait to live there!"

SA win series despite SL's thrilling win
JOHANNESBURG: Sachithra Senanayake struck a six off the penultimate ball to give Sri Lanka a two-wicket triumph over South Africa Sunday in the final match of a five one-day international series won 3-2 by the hosts.
Captain AB de Villiers and predecessor Graeme Smith (125 each) struck tons as South Africa made 312-4, but a century from Kumar Sangakkara (102) led the tourists to 314-8 at the Wanderers and a second win within three days.
Sri Lanka appeared to be cruising until Sangakkara became the fourth wicket to fall with 275 runs on the board and a late South Africa rally saw them grab two wickets within three balls during the final over.
It left the tourists needing five runs from two balls to succeed and Senanayake hit Robin Peterson for a six to snatch victory in a thrilling climax to the two-month tour.
Sangakkara struck 10 fours in a maiden ODI ton against South Africa and there were also valuable contributions from Lahiru Thirimanne (69), Upul Tharanga (46) and skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan (41).
De Villiers and Smith excelled as South Africa recovered from a sluggish early run rate having being sent in to bat by Dilshan in a match delayed for one hour by rain early in the Sri Lankan innings.
De Villiers finished unbeaten after facing 98 deliveries while Smith received a standing ovation from the sell-out 30,000 crowd after being caught by Dinesh Chandimal at mid-wicket off the bowling of Lasith Malinga.
While the Proteas skipper confirmed his position as one of the best stroke players in the world today with 10 fours and four sixes, Smith could not contain his joy as he walked off after a timely first ODI ton in three years.
There was a media and public outcry against him just a week ago after innings of six, 28 and two in the first three matches of the series before he stopped the rot with a brisk 68 in Kimberley two days ago.
Smith embroidered his innings with nine fours and four sixes off 143 balls during a 203-minute stand and the sun-drenched crowd revelled in his change of fortune.
South Africa lost opener Alviro Petersen (6) with only 10 runs on the board and were 70-2 when Faf du Plessis (24) departed before De Villiers and Smith took charge.
The Proteas stood at 133-2 after 30 overs and a run rate of 4.43 needed improvement on a good batting track, which the captains past and present duly did with 44 runs coming during a power play soon after. (AFP)

Sri Lanka defeat South Africa by five wickets
KIMBERLEY: Sri Lanka celebrated a rare success Friday on a tour to South Africa with a five-wicket victory in the fourth one-day international.
Big knocks from captain Tillakaratne Dilshan (87), man-of-the-match Thisara Perera (69) and Dinesh Chandimal (59) lifted the visitors to 304-5 after the home side reached 299-7 with skipper AB de Villiers (96) to the fore.
After keeping close to the six-run-an-over target at the De Beers Diamond Oval for much of the innings, the Sri Lankan batsman hit out against a South African attack sorely missing rested fast bowler Dale Steyn.
Unfortunately, the win came too late for the tourists to affect the five-game series with the Proteas taking a winning 3-0 lead three days ago thanks to a four-run win in a rain-hit Bloemfontein contest.
But the outcome in this northern Cape city did emphasise the steady improvement of Sri Lanka after a nightmare opening match in which they were bowled for 43 to suffer a humiliating 258-run loss.
"This was a fantastic effort as we were hoping to restrict South Africa to 250 or 260 runs," said Dilshan, "and on a personal note it was nice getting a big score again."
Dilshan averaged a run a ball in a 112-minute stand that included nine fours and two sixes while Perera was even quicker, taking just 44 balls with three fours and five sixes in his tally.
Chandimal may have struck only one six and one four and taken longer to compile his runs, but he was a steadying mid-innings influence as South Africa desperately sought wickets.
Dilshan believes his side can win again Sunday at the Wanderers in Johannesburg amid Sri Lankan government calls for a probe into a "crisis situation" after series losses to England, Australia and Pakistan as well.
After three consecutive wins since replacing Graeme Smith as one-day captain, De Villiers had his first taste of defeat and offered no excuses, only praise for the "gutsy" Sri Lankans, especially Perera.
The South Africa batsman-cum-wicketkeeper will take solace from his fine innings that was laced with eight fours and three sixes and ended when he became one of two Perera victims as the ball crashed into middle stump.
Another positive for the Proteas was a return to form by Smith (68), whose innings of six, 28 and two in the other matches had triggered a media and public outcry that forced De Villiers to come out in support of the opening bat.
Smith struck seven fours and a six before surrendering his wicket cheaply with Dilshan taking the catch off a leg-side shot after a Lasith Malinga delivery that was short of a length.

Pak-England Test series begins today in UAE
DUBAI: Pakistan will begin today their three-match ‘home’ Test series against England in the United Arab Emirates.
Rival captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Andrew Strauss both believe batsmen will be under pressure to perform.
The pitch for the opening encounter at Dubai stadium is likely to help spin bowlers and although Pakistan were certain to play with Saeed Ajmal and Adul Rehman, Strauss gave little hints at England's combination.
"It will depend on the state of the wicket, you always pick your team which you think gives you the right balance to win a Test and if the wicket turns a hell of a lot then obviously two spinners become an option," he said.
England, who rose to the top of the world Test rankings in August last year, last played two spinners in a Test in March 2010 when off-spinner James Tredwell partnered Graeme Swann.
But they will be hard pressed to include Monty Panesar, considering his eight-wicket haul in their second tour game win and the history of the pitch which helps spinners.
Pakistan won one of the two Tests played here so far, against Sri Lanka in October last year on the back of 13 wickets by the trio of Ajmal, Rehman and opener Mohammad Hafeez, who gives them an extra option in spin.
Spinners also took 11 of the 25 wickets that fell in the drawn Test between Pakistan and South Africa in 2010.
England losing Tim Bresnan - who gives them a batting option - as soon as the tour started, will push them to either play with five batsmen and include a third seamer, but Strauss remained philosophical.
"I will say we are trying to put the right team to win a game of cricket. That's always our philosophy," said Strauss, who showed confidence paceman Stuart Broad will recover from a minor foot injury.
"Because the wickets here are reasonably flat it's a great challenge for our bowlers who have done well, so its a logical next step to say 'right come on lets prove ourselves' and certainly you have to play well against them," said Strauss.
Strauss said Panesar bowled well and it was nice to see him back in the picture after playing the last of his 39 Tests at Cardiff in the 2009 Ashes.
"Monty bowled exceptionally well (in the side game) and it's fantastic to see him back, but as I said you pick the side which fits the conditions and allow you to win and that's all we will do tomorrow.
"The first Test always sets the tone for the rest of the series so the initial skirmishes are always important, Pakistan have played lot more cricket out here but the things are quite even in this respect as we have a good build up."
Misbah agreed batsmen will face a real test in Dubai.
"In Dubai whichever team bats good, gets an edge and its not only the game of spinners, I think fast bowlers also play a very important role, if you look at the last series (against Sri Lanka), the team which batted well won," he said.
"The wicket looks much better than the last Test we played here, we have a balanced attack and the conditions here favours us but at the same time its important to play good cricket against England.
"They are the top side in the world so we just can't rely on the fact that we know the conditions well. We still have to play good cricket to beat them."
The second Test will be played in Abu Dhabi (January 25-29) while the third will be played in Dubai from February 3-7. The Tests will be followed by four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals.

Australia beat India by an innings in 2nd Test
SYDNEY: Australia took a 2-0 series lead after beating India by an innings and 68 runs on the fourth day in the second Test in Sydney on Friday.
Australia, who had a 468-run first innings lead, dismissed the tourists for 400 with Sachin Tendulkar out for 80.
Once Tendulkar was dismissed shortly after lunch India collapsed and now cannot win the series with just two Tests remaining in Perth and Adelaide.
India have now suffered two heavy defeats after going down by 122 runs in last week's opening Melbourne Test.
Michael Clarke was man of the match after his unbeaten 329 and Tendulkar's prized wicket with his part-time spin.
Swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus finished with five wickets for 106 in India's second innings.
Match scores: India 191 and 400; Australia 659 for 4 declared.

Tendulkar misses elusive 100th ton
SYDNEY: Sachin Tendulkar again fell short of his 100th international century when he was dismissed for 80 in India's second innings of the second Test in Sydney on Friday.
Tendulkar looked on course to reach his elusive 100th ton before he edged spinner Michael Clarke to Mike Hussey at first slip.
The Australian players rejoiced wildly with the capture of Tendulkar's prized wicket in the middle session as India dug in to save the match after conceding a 468-run first innings lead.
Tendulkar was given a standing ovation by the small fourth day crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground after he was out.
He was dismissed for 73 and 32 in the first Test in Melbourne and 41 in the first innings of the Sydney Test.
Tendulkar has been stranded on 99 Test and one-day international centuries since scoring 111 against South Africa in the World Cup in March.
His last Test century was 146 against South Africa in Cape Town a year ago.
The prized wicket capped a dream Test for Australian skipper Clarke, who scored an unbeaten 329 in Australia's massive first innings of 659 for four declared.

Misbah says England tour won’t be easy
LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team skipper Misbah-ul-haq has said that harder work would be needed to face England in the coming tour, Geo News reported.
Talking to newsmen at the Allama Iqbal International Airport here, he said that Pakistan’s performance in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was more than satisfactory, which was a heartening thing to note.
He said, doubtless, England were tough cookies, but Pakistan were also alive to the fact that they would have to go extra miles to claim the tour.

Liverpool star banned for racist remarks
LONDON: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's troubled disciplinary history hit a new low Tuesday when he was given an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League match.
The English Football Association punishment, which included a fine of 40,000 pound ($62,000), came less than a year after Suarez left Ajax while serving a seven-match ban in the Netherlands for biting an opponent.
"Today is a very difficult and painful day for both me and my family," the 24-year-old Suarez said on his Twitter account. "Thanks for all the support, I'll keep working!"
The striker branded the "Cannibal of Ajax" by one Dutch newspaper had started to put past misdemeanors — including a contentious handball at the 2010 World Cup— behind him with fine displays on the pitch since arriving at Liverpool in January for around $35 million.
Now his reputation has been further stained by the FA's panel, which accepted Evra's allegation that Suarez had directed a racial insult at him during United's 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Oct. 15.
"The insulting words used by Mr. Suarez included a reference to Mr. Evra's color," the FA said in a statement.
The FA also warned Suarez about his future conduct. But he could be hit with another ban if he is convicted of making an obscene gesture toward home supporters when walking off the pitch following a 1-0 loss at Fulham on Dec. 5.

Pakistan defeat Korea by 6-2
AUCKLAND: National hockey team claimed their first victory of Champions trophy, beating Korea 6-2 in first game of day four on Auckland's North Shore on Thursday.
In the secondary pool, a late flurry of goals sealed the win for Pakistan.
With the scores locked at 2-2 through most of the second half, the Koreans crumbled completely late in the match, leaking four goals in the last 10 minutes.
