French Revolution drama to open Berlin film fest

BERLIN: A drama set around the French Revolution starring German-born Hollywood actress Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette will open next month's Berlin film festival, organisers said Wednesday.
"Les Adieux a la reine" (Farewell My Queen) by French director Benoit Jacquot will kick off the 62nd edition of the Berlinale, as the event is known, on February 9, the festival said in a statement.
The period drama features Kruger, previously seen in "Inglourious Basterds", Lea Seydoux, who appeared in last year's Woody Allen hit "Midnight in Paris", and Virginie Ledoyen, best known to international audiences for her turn in "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio.
"In a screen adaptation of Chantal Thomas' prize-winning novel of the same name, French director Benoit Jacquot portrays the first days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles," the festival said.
"With ironic overtones, a historical drama unfolds that also draws parallels to the present."
The French-Spanish co-production will appear in competition for the festival's prestigious Golden Bear top prize, to be awarded February 18 before the event wraps up the following day.
British director Mike Leigh will chair the jury while two-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep will accept an honorary Golden Bear.

برلن…جرمنی کے دارالحکومت میں برلن فلمی میلے کا آغاز ہوگیا۔ میلے میں دکھائی جانے والی پہلی فلم ساٹھ کے عشرے کی ایک مشہور ویسٹرن فلم کی ری میک تھی جسے 12 آسکرز کیلیے نامزد کیا جاچکا ہے۔ امریکا میں آسکر یا اکیڈمی ایوارڈز کا اعلان بھی اسی مہینے لاس اینجلس میں کیا جائے گا۔ میلے کی پہلی فلم کا نام True Grit ہے۔ اس ری میک کو مجموعی طور پر دس شعبوں میں آسکر انعام کے لیے نامزد کیا گیا ہے۔ برلن کا فلمی میلہ برلینالے دس روز تک جاری رہتا ہے۔ فیسٹیول میں اٹھاون ملکوں سے آنے والی چار سو کے قریب فلمیں دکھائی جائیں گی۔اس سال کے برلینالے فلم فیسٹیول میں مشہور امریکی گلوکارہ میڈونا، برطانوی اداکارہ وینیسا ریڈگریو، کولن فرتھ اور ہالی وڈ کے مشہور اداکار کیون اسپیسی شریک ہوں گے۔ برطانوی ڈائریکٹر ٹام ہوپر کی فلم دی کنگز اسپیچ امریکہ میں بارہ آسکر انعامات کے لیے نامزد کی گئی ہے۔ دلچسپ بات یہ ہے کہ ٹرو گرٹ اور دی کنگز اسپیچ میں سے کوئی ایک بھی فلم برلینالے کے اصل فلمی مقابلے کے لیے منتخب نہیں کی گئی۔ تاہم فلمی ماہرین کو امید ہے کہ یہ دونوں فلمیں اور دی سوشل نیٹ ورک نامی فلم اس سال سب سے زیادہ آسکر انعام حاصل کرنے میں کامیاب رہیں گی۔
