Ban on uranium mining removed in Queensland

(eNews.pk) - SYDNEY: Australia's mineral-rich Queensland state reversed a decades-long ban on uranium mining Monday, citing renewed interest in nuclear fuel after Canberra gave the nod to export to India.




Uranium has not been excavated in Queensland since the end of 1982 as Mary Kathleen mine, while mining as it was declared illegal by the state government in 1989.
But Premier Campbell Newman said the national government is overturning a ban on exports to India last year and the recent talks Prime Minister Julia Gillard in the subcontinent on the resumption of trade caused a rethink.
