Tens of thousands of user accounts for online government services in Canada were hacked during cyber attacks, officials said.

The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat explained in a press release that the attacks targeted the GCK service, which uses accounts from 30 federal departments and the Canadian Revenue Agency.

Officials said the passwords and usernames of 9,041 GCK account holders were “fraudulently obtained and attempted to gain access to government services.”

All affected accounts have been canceled.

In another attack, about 5,500 Canada Revenue Agency accounts were targeted, officials said, adding that access to those accounts had been suspended to protect taxpayers’ information.

Officials said the government and federal police had launched an investigation to determine whether there was a breach of confidentiality and that information was obtained from those accounts.

According to CBC, several Canadians have reported since the beginning of August that their banking information is linked to their Canadian Revenue Agency accounts.

Payments for Canadian Emergency Benefit, including a government-sponsored package of aid in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, have been issued in their names without their request.
