The US State Department says the United States, along with a number of UN agencies, is considering ways to invest in the Afghan economy.

The announcement, made at a White House briefing, came after a statement from a State Department official in Islamabad yesterday.

The statement said the United States would show greater flexibility in imposing economic sanctions on Afghanistan.

This week, 39 US lawmakers wrote letters to the US Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury asking them to help restore Afghanistan’s frozen assets and help rebuild the Afghan economy.

The letter was also supported by the United Nations.

During a briefing in Washington, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “We are working with various UN agencies, including the UNDP, to find ways to invest in the Afghan economy and to provide humanitarian assistance.” ‘

He added that the United States had last week backed the release of 28 280 million in humanitarian aid from the World Bank.

He said the United States had sent کروڑ 208 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan since August, bringing the total to 47 475 million this year.

The US official acknowledged that Afghanistan now needs more help than humanitarian aid, and that is why the US Treasury Department has eased sanctions on Afghanistan after August 15.

The flexibility of the United States in its stance on Afghanistan came after several calls for a review of sanctions imposed on the Afghan Taliban government.

During the sanctions, the United States also froze 9 9.5 billion in Afghan assets and debts.

The move dealt a severe blow to the financially dependent Afghan economy, as well as exacerbating the humanitarian crisis caused by four decades of civil war and drought.

A State Department spokesman said in a briefing that the economic crisis in Afghanistan was not due to the current situation in particular, but was “something that existed even before the withdrawal of US troops and has intensified.”

“We understand that the situation in Afghanistan needs an immediate response, now that the winter months have begun and we are concerned about the well-being of the Afghan people,” he added.

He said that US Special Representative for Afghanistan Tom West had attended a recent meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Islamabad where it was decided to set up a trust fund to provide financial assistance to the Afghan people.

He said the United States could not help Afghanistan alone, adding that other countries should also come forward to help Afghanistan, especially those in the region that are close to Afghanistan and much more for the Afghan people. They can and should.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that there are countries in the region which have a stable and secure Afghanistan in their interest and they have the potential to make it possible.
