Taliban and US officials say senior Taliban officials and US envoys will hold talks on Saturday and Sunday to curb extremist groups in Afghanistan and facilitate the evacuation of foreign nationals and Afghans.

This is the first meeting since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in late August, which ended a 20-year military presence there and increased the power of the Taliban in the country.

The talks will take place in Doha, the capital of the Persian Gulf state of Qatar.

Doha-based Taliban spokesman Sohail Shaheen told the AP that the talks would also review the Taliban’s peace deal with Washington in 2020.

The agreement paved the way for the final withdrawal of the United States.

Sohail Shaheen said: “Yes, a meeting on bilateral relations and the implementation of the Doha Agreement has been scheduled. It will cover various topics.”

Another official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “terrorism will also be discussed in the talks.”

Since the Taliban took power, the militant group ISIS has targeted both the Taliban and ethnic and religious minorities.

On Friday, an ISIS suicide bomber killed at least 55 worshipers at a Shiite mosque and wounded dozens more in the deadliest attack since the US withdrawal.

ISIS has carried out a series of attacks against the country’s Shiites since its emergence in eastern Afghanistan in 2014.

ISIS is also considered the biggest threat to the United States.

The 2020 agreement between the United States and the Taliban, negotiated by the Trump administration, called on the Taliban to sever ties with terrorist groups and ensure that Afghanistan will no longer host terrorists other than the United States and attack its allies.

It appears that the two sides will also discuss the growing threat in talks over the weekend.

The Taliban have said they do not want US help against terrorism and have warned Washington against any attack on Afghan soil outside the country’s borders.
