US refuses to give "special response" to Pakistan-TTP talks

The United States has refused to comment on Islamabad’s decision to start talks with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), saying the two countries still have a “line of interest” on Afghanistan.

According to US media reports pointed out that on Monday Pakistan and the TTP agreed on a “complete ceasefire” after talks to end years of militancy in the country.

US media also reported that Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister Amir Khan Mottaki arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday on a three-day visit, the first by an Afghan minister to Pakistan since the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15.

The issue was also raised at a briefing at the State Department, where a journalist reminded spokesman Ned Price that Washington still considers the TTP a terrorist organization and called for an official US response to the talks.

“If we have any particular reaction to Pakistan’s negotiations with the Pakistani Taliban, we will definitely let you know,” Ned Price said.

“We are in regular contact with the Pakistani leadership regarding Afghanistan,” he said.

He said the US government had discussed the issue with Pakistani officials in the past.

The spokesman said: “We have heard from our Pakistani counterparts, both publicly and privately, that they too have an interest in benefiting Afghanistan’s minorities, including its women and girls, over the past 20 years. Should not be wasted.

“Thus, when it comes to Afghanistan, our interests are very much in common and we are continuing these talks,” he said.

Ned Price also said that the new Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tom West, would soon visit Islamabad to “continue the talks in the coming days.”
