The Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) has decided to significantly reduce taxes to facilitate sugar imports and curb sugar shortages.

Pakistan currently has 1.2 million tonnes of sugar in its inventory, which is expected to run out in two months. To avoid this, it was decided to reduce taxes on the import of 300,000 tons of sugar.

Imported sugar is subject to 1% sales tax instead of 17%. The holding tax has been reduced from 5.5 per cent to 0.25 per cent, while the value added tax has been temporarily waived.

It is expected that the price of sugar will remain stable in the local market due to tax cuts, as imported sugar will continue to sell at Rs 80 per kg.

The ECC meeting was chaired by Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance. Minister for Industries and Production Hamad Azhar said the decision would improve sugar reserves in the country and its availability in the country.

The trading company was directed to submit tenders within a week and take other steps to facilitate sugar imports.

Tax exemption has already been given due to shortage of 1.5 million tonnes of wheat. The private sector has started importing 500,000 tonnes of wheat and the first consignment will arrive in Pakistan on August 26.

The ECC also allowed the trading corporation to place an initial order for the import of 200,000 tonnes of wheat.
