A former nurse who killed three patients by contaminating their veins with antibiotics was sentenced by a Japanese court to life in prison on Tuesday, according to local media.

During her trial, 34-year-old Ayumi Kobuki admitted that she had killed patients five years ago in the 70’s and 80’s that shocked Japan.

She had earlier told police she had killed 20 people in just two months, but later told prosecutors she could not comment during the trial.

The presiding judge of Yokohama District Court said he was considering Koboki’s death sentence, the NHK broadcaster reported.

“She said she regrets (her actions) and wants to pay the price for her crime. There is a chance it will be corrected, and I could not help but hesitate to choose the death penalty.” . ” The judge said.

Judicial officials were not available for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Japan, with more than 100 prisoners awaiting execution, is one of the few developed countries that still has the death penalty.

Prosecutors had demanded the death penalty for Kabuki, but the nurse’s lawyers allegedly argued that she was suffering from depression due to stress over her patients’ deaths, and that her ability had diminished.

NHK said Kabuki had told the court she did not want to blame family members for any wrongdoing with her patients when she was on her shift, and when one of the victims died. When done, he felt “relaxed.”

According to the broadcaster, the son of one of the victims said he was not happy with the decision.

“He killed innocent people with selfish motives and he was not sentenced to death. That is wrong,” he said.

Despite international criticism, public support for the death penalty remains strong in Japan, including rights groups.
