Farooq Sattar, a former MQM Rabita committee member, said he did not know that party leaders had asked the owners of the Ali Enterprises clothing factory for protection money.

Arshad Bhaila and Shahid Bhaila, the factory owners, were initially booked into the case and arrested for deliberate murder and neglect of the safety of their workers. The brothers received bail in February 2013 and eventually fled to Dubai for receiving threats.

“I was involved in the case when the second JIT ordered compensation for the grieving families,” said Sattar. It was decided that 500,000 rupees each would be given to the families of the victims. “I even met the Bhaila brothers in the United States, but they didn’t tell me about the extortion demand.”

He noted that he was not questioning the JIT report. People involved in this “inhuman brutality” should be held accountable, he added, adding that it is scary that people were burned alive because the factory owners did not pay “protection money”. This case should be followed up and justice distributed.
