Election Act Amendment Bill passed in joint sitting of Parliament

The Election Act Amendment Bill introduced by the government in the joint sitting of Parliament was passed by a majority vote.

Under this bill, two amendments have been proposed in the Election Act of 2017 which are related to the use of electronic voting machines in elections and giving the right to vote to Pakistanis living abroad through internet.

After the bill was passed, the opposition tore up copies and walked out of the house.

Earlier, the motion to introduce electoral reform bill was passed by a majority vote by Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Babar Awan.

There were 221 votes in favor of the electoral reform movement and 203 against.

Regarding the counting of votes, PPP Senator Taj Haider raised an objection on which the Speaker directed for recount.

However, during the counting, there was severe chaos in the House and the opposition members came in front of Speaker Dice and chanted slogans against the government and the Prime Minister.

Due to the heat in the House, Sergeant at Arms took the Prime Minister into his custody while members of the opposition tore up copies of the agenda.

At the beginning of the joint sitting of Parliament, which began an hour late, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Babar Awan requested to postpone voting on the Electoral Reforms Bill.

Asad Qaiser invited Babar Awan to present the Electronic Voting Bill for approval under Agenda Number Two (Election Amendment Bill). Babar Awan replied that the opposition wants to talk to him on this issue. Be postponed.
