The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said 51 areas of the country were affected by grasshopper attacks, while 27 of the areas where grasshoppers were attacked were most severely affected, 13 districts in Punjab, nine in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and two in the Sindh Province.
NDMA spokesman said they had carried out surveys and sprays in the areas to counter the attack that damaged the agricultural fields. He said, while giving details of efforts, that 132,000 hectares of the area had been surveyed in the past 24 hours while spraying was performed on 6,690 hectares in Baluchistan Province. “75,000 hectares have been surveyed and 2,000 hectares have been sprayed in Punjab province,” the agency said, adding that KP’s 71,000 hectares have been surveyed and 492 hectares have been sprayed to combat the locust attack.
The NDMA announced that 190,000 hectares had been measured in the province of Sindh in the past 24 hours, of which 28 hectares had been sprayed. “In Pakistan, 38% of the area (60% in Baluchistan, 25% in Sindh and 15% in Punjab) are breeding grounds for the desert grasshopper, while the entire country is at risk of invasion if the desert grasshopper is not included in the brood regions” , says the report entitled “Situation of Desert Locusts in Pakistan”. It should be noted that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a report in April warning of a serious food security crisis this year in Pakistan and several other regional countries due to grasshopper invasions.
