The Taliban’s new education minister said women in Afghanistan would be allowed to attend universities because the country wanted to rebuild after decades of war, but that gender segregation and an Islamic dress code would be mandatory.

Minister Abdul Baqi Haqqani said last week that the new Taliban government, named after him, would “start building the country today” and did not want to go back 20 years when the movement was in power.

“Wherever possible, girls will be educated and classes will be set aside according to the Islamic Sharia movement’s interpretation,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, she said, “Thank God we have a large number of female teachers. We will not have any problem with that. Female teachers for female students.” Every effort will be made to find and supply. “

The issue of women’s education has been one of the key questions facing the Taliban as they try to convince the world that the most radical government has been in place since the 1990s, when women were evicted from their homes. ۔ They have changed since then. Studying or working outside was largely forbidden.

Taliban officials say women can study and work according to Sharia law and local cultural traditions, but strict dress laws will apply. Haqqani said the hijab would be mandatory for all girls, but did not specify whether it meant a scarf or a veil.

On Saturday, a group of black-clad female students, who completely covered them from head to toe, demonstrated in Kabul in support of dress and various class rules.

Haqqani said special measures would be taken to ensure segregation where female teachers are not available.

“Men (women) can learn when there is a real need, but according to the Shari’a, they should wear the hijab,” he said. Classes will be covered so that male and female students can be distributed and education can be provided through streaming or close circuit TV.

Visual classes have already been seen in many places since the fall of the Western-backed government last month and the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul.

Haqqani told reporters that gender discrimination would be enforced throughout Afghanistan and that all subjects taught in colleges would be reviewed in the coming months.
