A Chinese laboratory has developed a drug that it believes can stop the coronavirus pandemic.
A drug tested by scientists from the renowned Chinese University in Beijing could not only shorten the recovery time of infected people, but also offer short-term immunity to the virus, the researchers said.
A study of the team’s research, published in Cell magazine on Sunday, suggests that the use of the antibodies is a potential “cure” for the disease and shortens recovery time.
Sunney Xie, director of Beijing University’s Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics, told AFP that the drug was successful in the animal testing phase.
“When we injected neutralizing antibodies into infected mice, the viral load was reduced by a factor of 2500 after five days, which means that this potential drug has a therapeutic effect,” said Xie.
The drug uses neutralizing antibodies produced by the human immune system to prevent the virus from infecting cells – which the Xies team has isolated from the blood of 60 restored patients.
Xie said his team searched for the antibody day and night.
“Our expertise is more in single cell genomics than in immunology or virology. When we found that the single cell genome approach can effectively find the neutralizing antibody, we were thrilled. “He added that the drug should be ready later this year in time for a possible winter outbreak of the virus, which has infected 4.8 million people around the world and killed more than 315,000 people.
“Planning for the clinical trial is ongoing. The hope is that these neutralized antibodies can become a specialized drug that would stop the pandemic,” said Xie, adding that it will be conducted in Australia and other countries since The cases in China have decreased and fewer offer human guinea pigs for testing.
China already has five potential coronavirus vaccines in human testing, a health official said last week. However, the World Health Organization has warned that developing a vaccine could take 12 to 18 months.
