The lower house of parliament on Monday approved a budget of Rs 7,294.9 billion for the financial year 2020-21.

160 MNAs were approved after voting in favor of Section 9 of the Finance Act, while 119 opposed it.

During Monday’s meeting, the government and the opposition have kept a distance since the meeting began. As soon as Communications Minister Murad Saeed addressed the assembly, the opposition members left.

Saeed recalled Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s last speech in which he challenged Prime Minister Imran Khan for a direct discussion. The minister called himself “Imran Khan’s soldier” and said he was good enough to handle the PPP leader.

“Choose the moderator of your choice and let them decide where and when you want,” he said.

Saeed recalled the US drone strikes in Pakistan when Asif Ali Zardari was president. “You (PPP) call it terrorism, which the United States calls terrorism. They allowed the United States to launch drone strikes and then condemned those strikes as well.”

After leaving the opposition, National Assembly spokesman Asad Qaiser asked Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to persuade him to return. Saeed then replied that the opposition members would return immediately after his speech.

Meanwhile, PML-N leader Khawaja Asif said he had heard from someone that the government had forcibly brought members of the treasury infected with the corona virus to parliament. He said that the government would do everything for the approval of the federal budget.

Last week, the federal government came under fire for raising petrol prices by Rs 25 per liter. Opposition leaders had said that the world was focusing on eradicating its population amid the epidemic of corona virus, but the PTI government had dropped a “petrol bomb” on Pakistan.

Minister of Industry and Production Hamad Azhar in his speech justified the increase in petrol prices. “Prices vary depending on the international market,” he said.

“When oil prices fell, we lowered prices,” Azhar said. “Now that they have doubled the actual price, we have slightly increased the price without raising taxes.”

He said that the PML-N, whose leaders criticize the PTI, had also increased the price of petrol by Rs 35 per liter during its tenure.
