The Supreme Court has taken notice of the use of social media and YouTube as a means of distributing objectionable content.

He came to know about it on Wednesday when he heard a bail application filed by Shaukat Ali, a man accused of a sectarian crime.

“We have no problem with freedom of expression,” Judge Qazi Amin said. “We are paid with the people’s money,” he said, adding that the people have the right to discuss the judges’ actions and decisions.

“But the constitution does not give people the right to discuss our privacy,” he said. “Has the PTA or the FIA seen what is happening on YouTube?” “They don’t even forgive our family on YouTube or social media,” Justice Amin said.

“Some people sit and behave like our uncles on YouTube,” he said, adding that judges were being humiliated.

“Yesterday we made the decision and then it started on YouTube,” he said. “We are patient but it must be stopped,” the judge said.

A PTA official said they could not remove individual content, they could only report it.

Judge Mushir Alam noted that in some countries, YouTube has been blocked. He said that they should try to publish articles against the European Union or the United States.

Judge Amin asked how many people had been prosecuted for such crimes.

The court sent a notification to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney General. Judge Amin said that people were being incited against the army, judiciary and government on social media.

Judge Alam said that in some countries, social laws are governed by local laws.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till after Eid.
