Police in Karachi have claimed to have arrested six suspected militants as part of an intelligence alert, a senior police officer said Saturday.

The detainees were planning a major terrorist attack in Karachi, Western SSP Fida Hussain Janwari told reporters.

“Arrested terrorists have historically been involved in attacks on army, border and police levies in different parts of Balochistan,” the police officer said. “You confessed to the terrorist attacks on the checkpoints.”

The detainees confessed to belonging to the militant BRAS organization, the police officer said. An alliance of separatist armed groups in Balochistan is the Baloch Raji Ajoi Singer or BRAS.

Authorities stepped up security in Karachi after the June 29 attack on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Militants killed three people, including a police officer, in an attack on a stock exchange last month. Police killed all four militants during the encounter.

The Western SSP claimed that the detainees had confessed to receiving training and financial support from the Indian intelligence agency.
He added that his network operates from Afghanistan.
