President Dr. Arif Alvi, in an interview with a private television broadcaster, declined the possibility of an online session of the parliament, saying that there is no problem if the session is held with social distancing.
When asked by the President whether the Rules of Procedure could allow for an online meeting to be held, the President said: “Rules can be changed.”
He personally declared himself in favor of digitization and recalled that, as a member of the National Assembly, he had proposed to digitize the Parliament in order to allow all members online access to all documents relating to laws and other matters.
Regarding the question about his recent meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Investigation Report on Independent Power Generators (IPPs), Dr. Alvi, the report is one-sided and does not include stakeholder contributions. He added that he advised the prime minister to hire internationally renowned companies for a forensic review of the report and to seek legal advice before taking action against those involved in corruption.
He said that since the IPPs were set as a result of the energy policies and agreements reached in 1994, 2002, and 2014, the government should treat the issue carefully and keep an eye on past experiences such as the Reko Diq.
When asked about the investigation report on sugar and wheat shortages and the alleged involvement of some political figures, the president said that as far as he knew Prime Minister Imran Khan, he had a strong will to deal with such situations.
