The sanctions will also target those involved in serious human rights violations and corruption.
A spokesman in Washington told reporters that “the Treasury Department will take a number of actions to identify individuals who are involved in malicious activities that harm democracy and democratic institutions around the world, including corruption, repression.” , Organized crime, and serious human rights violations.
In addition, the Treasury Department will announce measures to address the shortcomings that encourage corruption.
The Kanye West Endowment for International Peace, a Washington-based think tank, said the Biden administration had invited governments to the meeting and opted for a participatory approach.
They were invited to include liberal democracies, weak democracies, and states with authoritarian characteristics.
The U.S. Freedom House Index for Democracies declared 77 of the invited countries independent or full democracies, three were declared partially independent, and Angola, Congo and Iraq were declared non-independent.
India, the world’s most populous democracy, has fallen to the status of ‘partially independent’ in 2021 along with Pakistan.
Carnegie’s report states that the eight countries invited to the summit, including Pakistan, have dropped dramatically in terms of democracy, while four, including Brazil and India, have fallen below the highest levels of democracy in the last 10 years.
Europe tops the list with 29 invited countries, followed by 27 countries in the Western Hemisphere, followed by Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa with 21 and 17 countries, respectively.
In contrast, there are few countries in the Middle East, North Africa, South and Central Asia that have been invited.
In the Middle East, only Iraq and Israel were invited, while only four countries from South and Central Asia, India, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan were invited.
