Two Kashmiri fighters, including a key leader, are dead after Tuesday’s 12-hour gun battle by Indian government forces in the capital of Occupied Indian Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ & K).
Paramilitary and police officers exchanged fire with Kashmiri fighters after cordoning off part of the area. Five houses were left in ruins during the battle and ten others were badly damaged, residents told AFP.
A Hezbullah Mujahideen commander, Junaid Ahmed Sehrai and the son of a leading separatist, were killed in the clash, the police said in a statement.
Another Hezboll Mujahideen member was also killed and four Indian police officers were wounded.
Most mobile voice and internet services were discontinued across the city at the beginning of the fighting and are yet to be restored.
Residents flocked to the street as news of the murders spread to throw stones at the Indian armed forces, which fired tear gas and shotgun shells to disperse them. No injuries were reported.
The death occurred two weeks after Hizbul Moudjahidin chief Riyaz Naikoo and a family member were killed in a two-day gun battle by government forces. Counterintelligence operations in IoK were intensified during the Corona virus blockade, while fighters continued to attack government forces.
Unlike in the past, authorities are now burying fighters in thinly populated border areas away from their homes to prevent a large funeral. Police said 73 fighters were killed in occupied Kashmir this year, many during Ramazan.

نیم فوجی دستوں اور پولیس نے علاقے کا کچھ حصہ گھیرے میں لینے کے بعد کشمیری جنگجوؤں کے ساتھ فائرنگ کا تبادلہ کیا۔ رہائشیوں نے خبر رساں ادارے اے ایف پی کو بتایا کہ جنگ کے دوران پانچ مکانات ملبے میں گھس گئے اور 10 دیگر افراد کو شدید نقصان پہنچا۔
پولیس نے ایک بیان میں کہا ، اس جھڑپ میں حزب المجاہدین کا ایک کمانڈر جنید احمد صحرائی اور ایک علیحدگی پسند رہنما کے ایک اعلی رہنما کا بیٹا مارا گیا۔
بیان میں کہا گیا کہ حزب اللہ مجاہدین کا ایک اور ممبر بھی مارا گیا اور چار ہندوستانی پولیس اہلکار زخمی ہوئے۔
اس ہلاکت کی خبر ہندوستانی افواج پر پتھراؤ کرنے کے لئے پھیلتے ہی شہری سڑکوں پر آئے ، جنہوں نے منتشر ہونے کے لئے آنسو گیس اور شاٹگن کی گولیاں چلائیں۔ کسی کے زخمی ہونے کی اطلاع نہیں ہے۔
