According to the data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the Sensitive Price Index (ACPI) has measured that the inflation rate has increased by 1.07% in the business week ending November 18.

According to the report, sharp rise in food prices was recorded during the current week.

PBS data showed that for the sixth consecutive week, the weekly inflation rate rose to 1.81% in November.

In this regard, for those earning less than Rs 17,732 per month, the SPI scale has increased by 0.39 per cent, while for those earning Rs 44,175 per month, inflation has increased by 1.44 per cent.

The main reasons for the rise in SPI are rise in prices of essential commodities, including 8.26 per cent for chicken, 4.72 per cent for edible oil, 4.18 per cent for bananas, 3.94 per cent for bath soap and 3.94 per cent for vegetables. The price of ghee has increased by 3.15% per 2.5 kg while the price of vegetable ghee has increased by 2.38% per kg.

Besides, prices of rice rose by 1.76 per cent, pulses by 1.62 per cent, eggs by 1.52 per cent, firewood by 1.24 per cent and ready-made tea by 1.21 per cent.

During the same period, prices of some items were reduced by 5.77 per cent, sugar by 4.25 per cent, onion by 2.14 per cent and jaggery by 1.48 per cent.

In addition, the price of lentils has declined by 0.43 per cent this week, garlic by 0.13 per cent, wheat flour by 0.04 per cent and gram by 0.02 per cent.

During the week, prices of 27 items out of 51 items increased and prices of 10 items decreased while prices of 14 items remained unchanged.

Fahad Rauf, an analyst at Ismail Iqbal Securities, said inflation had remained at more than one per cent for the past four weeks and was different from normal.

“This increase in SPI indicates a further increase in the consumer price index in the coming months,” he said.

He further said that the inflation rate will reach 10.3 percent this month.

He believes that in view of the rising cost of transportation and the increase in the price of diesel in the last few months, the prices of essential commodities will go up further from January to March 2022.

He said that the rise in inflation was due to 13 per cent rise in value of dollar against rupee since July and rising energy prices.
