EU announces 1 billion Euro aid package for Afghanistan

The European Union has announced a 1 billion aid package to save Afghanistan from a major humanitarian, social and economic crisis.

According to AFP news agency, the European Union said in a statement that the amount of 250 million euros already announced to meet the humanitarian needs of Afghanistan will be increased by 300 million euros while the remaining amount will be added to Afghanistan’s neighboring countries. Will be given where people are going as refugees after fleeing the Taliban regime.

European Commission President Arsula van der Leyen announced the aid during the Virtual G20 Summit hosted by Italy, which was convened to discuss the humanitarian and security situation in Afghanistan.

He stressed that EU funds are a direct aid to Afghans and that these funds will be sent to international organizations working on the ground instead of the Taliban government because the EU does not recognize the Taliban government.

Meanwhile, EU humanitarian aid remains frozen, despite humanitarian aid.

“We must do everything possible to save Afghanistan from human, social and economic catastrophe, and we need to do it quickly in the face of the onset of winter,” he said.

“We have clarified the conditions for any dialogue with the Afghan authorities, including respect for human rights, but the Afghan people should not be punished for the Taliban’s behavior and actions,” he said.

EU countries fear that Afghan refugees may try to enter their country in the current situation in Afghanistan, as a large number of refugees fleeing Syria fled to European countries in 2015.

The European Union believes that a Taliban-ruled Afghanistan can be stabilized and that the flow of refugees can be stopped with the help of countries between Afghanistan and Europe.

Van der Leyen said that the countries of the European Union, especially the countries participating in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s mission agreement, have a moral obligation to help the Afghans.

The 1 billion aid package announced by the European Union will help improve Afghanistan’s health sector while helping Afghanistan’s neighbors curb terrorism, crime and migration.
