A group of professors at Stanford University in the US has called on the US Department of Justice to stop a program started by former President Donald Trump to search for Chinese spies in universities.

The letter, written by professors and signed by 177 members of Stanford faculty, was released to the public today.
“This undermines the competitiveness of U.S. research and technology and encourages foresight and raises concerns about racial discrimination,” the letter said.
When asked about criticism of the China initiative, U.S. Justice Department spokesman Wayne Hornbuckle said the government would be committed to harming U.S. national security and the Chinese government’s illegal efforts against us.
“We are deeply concerned about discrimination,” he said, acknowledging hate crimes against Asian Americans.
The Justice Department has released details of at least 27 cases involving the China initiative, including the perpetrators, including the results, while some cases have been withdrawn and some are being investigated.
Professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Howard University were among those in charge, as were five Chinese scientists who worked as part-time scientists last year. The charges against them were dropped in July this year.
According to the report, a federal judge in Tennessee last week released a professor who was accused of concealing ties with China in a request for a grant for NASA research, but the prosecutor could not prove it.
