World leaders open Rio summit on 'green' economy

(eNews.pk) - RIO DE JANEIRO: World leaders began a three-day summit of the UN on Wednesday down to support a plan to eradicate poverty and protect the environment.




United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, the chief formally opened the Rio +20 Summit on Sustainable Development, which brings together 191 members of the UN, including 86 presidents and heads of government.
The high-profile event comes 20 years after the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where nations pledged to reverse climate change, desertification and species loss.
The summit began with a three-minute film, "Welcome to the Anthropocene" that gave a visual journey through the dramatic changes in the environment since the Industrial Revolution. The Anthropocene is the name given by many scientists for a new era in the history of Earth. It derives from the Greek words to indicate that the era of humans.
