US sweetens Taliban prisoner proposal

(eNews.pk) - WASHINGTON: The Obama administration, in a measure to revive the Afghan peace talks, has sweetened a proposed settlement under which it would transfer to the Taliban detainees from the Guantanamo prison in exchange for a U.S. soldier in the hands of the allies of the Taliban in Pakistan.




The revised proposal, a grant of an earlier U.S. offer, could alter the sequence of motion of five senior Taliban leaders detained for years in the U.S. military prison for the State of Qatar, said sources familiar with the matter said.
U.S. officials have hoped that the exchange of prisoners, proposed as a measure of good faith in the initial discussions between U.S. negotiators and officials of the Taliban, would open the door to peace talks between the militants and the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
