The Prime Minister’s Financial Advisor, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh chaired a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Wednesday and approved a billion dollar aid package for the agricultural sector. The package is part of the 100 billion rupee funds earmarked for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the agricultural sector from the 1200 billion rupee coronavirus aid package. The package includes subsidizing farmers for fertilizers and reducing the bank surcharge for agriculture loans, subsidies for cottonseed and whitefly pesticides, and sales tax subsidies for locally produced tractors.
The agricultural package was proposed by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research at a price of Rs 56.6 billion, but the ECC requested the Ministry of NFS&R to use it according to its share of the total package of Rs 100 billion intended for SMEs and SMEs have been announced to rationalize the agricultural sector on the coronavirus bailout of 1200 billion rupees. As part of the agricultural package developed by the Ministry of NFS&R in consultation with stakeholders, farmers would be offered Rs 37 billion in subsidies for the purchase of fertilizers. The amount would include a subsidy of Rs 925 per bag for DAP and other phosphate fertilizers and Rs 243 per bag for urea and other nitrogen fertilizers.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the mobile phone subscription in the country has reached 164 million. The ECC discussed various parts of the directive and, in principle, approved it with instructions to the Ministry of Industry and Production to further optimize its various features and incentives to promote localization and research and development that leads to the export of mobile phones.
The ECC also approved a proposal by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to release 35,000 tons of wheat from PASSCO to the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir at a price of Rs 1.52 billion, including the cost of wheat and ancillary costs. 50% to be paid by the federal government from the announced stimulus package to combat COVID-19.
