Twitter’s account verification system has been embroiled in controversy on several occasions after several white supremacists were incorrectly verified by the real system. That’s why social media shut down its endorsement program in 2017, but the latest reports suggest that it will return once it is restored.

Jane Manchin Wang, a reverse engineer who discovered new features of social media even before his announcement, has just revealed that Twitter is working on a new authentication system. With the new system, Twitter users will be able to request confirmation directly from the application. Verification requirements and guidelines will also be publicly documented.

Twitter has confirmed Wang’s discovery and, in fact, commented on upcoming updates as well as what he is doing.

“This time around, Twitter will also publicly document what qualifies a Twitter user to be verified. The hope is that with more clarity and transparency around the process, people will understand why the company makes the choices it does.

Twitter in the past had internal guidelines around verification, but this will be the first time Twitter has ever publicly and specifically documented those rules.”

This option will be available under “Personal Information” in the “Account Settings” page in the Twitter app. It is not yet available because its address has only been found in future updates. That being said, there is no official timetable for when this latest information will come out.
