ISLAMABAD: The recently released Pakistani scientist Dr Khalil Chishty, said that he was feeling great after setting foot on his home soil, Geo news reported Tuesday.
Dr Chishty, who had been imprisoned in India for the last 20 years, arrived here from New Delhi via the special aircraft of President Asif Ali Zardari.
Talking to media at the Islamabad airport he said that he had almost lost hope, but by the grace of Almighty Allah this miracle came to pass and he was back home from “a point of virtually no return”.
The scientist was warmly welcomed at the Islamabad airport by Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Babar Ghouri.
Dr Chishti also saluted Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his kindheartedness Pakistani leaders for making efforts for his release.
Earlier, President Zardari, during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi last month, had pleaded for clemency for Chishty given his advanced age.
The Indian Supreme Court on May 10 permitted Chishty, 80, who was in a jail in Ajmer, to visit Pakistan during the pendency of his appeal against his conviction in a murder case and life imprisonment.
Chishty was sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of a person in a brawl while he was visiting Ajmer in April 1992. He was granted bail by the apex court on April 9, which asked him to make a separate plea for permission to visit Pakistan.
