Saudi Arabia Decides to Partially Ease Curfew

After more than two months of stringent measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, Saudi Arabia will begin to ease restrictions on movement and travel this week.

The state news agency said in a statement that the restrictions will be lifted in three phases, culminating in a curfew that will end entirely on June 21, with the exception of the holy city of Mecca.

The Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, which attract millions of travelers from around the world, will be suspended until further notice, the statement said

In the first phase, which begins on Thursday (today), the 24-hour curfew will be reduced to 3:00 p.m. Free movement between regions and some retail and wholesale activities, including shopping centers, can resume until 6 a.m. across the country.

The Saudi press agency reported that freedom of movement will be allowed from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. starting Sunday, May 30. Domestic flights may be resumed, but international flights are still prohibited.

Mosques can again hold prayers, subject to social detachment and hygiene, except in Mecca, where restrictions on attendance remain.

Citizens continue to be asked to wear masks in public and to continue hygiene and social distance measures after June 21.
