The Punjab government has decided to expand its underground rainwater storage project since Prime Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has approved the introduction of the system in other cities in the province to Lahore, Dunya News reported Thursday.

The CM said in its statement that rainwater storage projects will be started in large cities in Punjab and that the reserves will be used for horticulture. The water could also be made drinkable after cleaning, he said.

“An underground tank with the capacity to store 1.4 million gallons of water was built in Lahore. A new sewage pipe is being built from the Larex colony to Gulshan-i-Ravi. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 14 billion. Work is currently underway on a surface water treatment plant (SWTP) with a budget of around Rs 21 billion.

“A horticultural academy is being set up in Lahore where individuals receive gardening and management training. Construction of houses will soon begin under the Naya Pakistan Housing Program and all related facilities will be made available to the private sector. The project for the provision of clean drinking water within the Aab-e-Pak authority is being accelerated. “
