37 Countries Launch Alliance for Common Ownership

37 countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) have called for joint ownership of vaccines, medicines and diagnostic tools to fight the global COVID-19 pandemic. To target patent laws, they fear that this could be an obstacle to sharing critical deliveries.

While most developing countries, the Coronavirus Technology Access Pool, have been praised by groups like MSF, an alliance between the pharmaceutical industry has asked whether efforts to bundle intellectual property would really expand.

The President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, said that “vaccines, tests, diagnoses, treatments and other important tools for responding to coronaviruses must be made widely available as global public goods”.

WHO published a “call for solidarity to act” calling on other stakeholders to join the voluntary initiative.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in an online press conference: “WHO recognizes the important role that patents play in promoting innovation, but this is a time when people must be a priority.”

The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations said that “the” Solidarity Call to Action “promotes a unified model that ignores the specific circumstances of each situation, product, and country.”

The patent-handling gap has shown how some regions can become losers, said Anna Marriott, health policy manager at Oxfam anti-poverty group

She added, “The attempt by the pharmaceutical industry to reject the World Health Organization’s initiative suggests that they care more about profits than people’s health.”
