An Australian military expert accused of distributing child pornography has reached an agreement with prosecutors in the US probably substantially reduce the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison he faced.
Dr. Adam Cobb, 46, who worked as an analyst for the government during operations in East Timor and US Special Operations Command in Florida, was arrested last April while he was a professor and director in the US Estimated Naval War College in Rhode Island.
Prosecutors had described Cobb as having a "predatory tendency" troll for girls online.
One of his alleged victims was a British girl of 17 years who allegedly persuaded to travel to the US without the knowledge of their parents.
When she was in the US allegedly videotaped sex he had with her.
Prosecutors also allege Cobb convinced a 16-year-old US to send him pornographic pictures of herself.
Under the agreement Cobb guilty to one count of distributing child pornography, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years shall be declared, but prosecutors will recommend five years in prison.
It will be up to a judge to decide the fate of Cobb.
"The government will recommend that the court impose the mandatory minimum sentence, that is, five years in prison," said the plea agreement.
Cobb is scheduled to be arraigned in a court of Rhode Island on Wednesday.
Cobb has been in custody since 18 December after a judge found he had violated bail under by contacting one of his victims and has four mobile phones.
He was prohibited from possessing communication devices.
Cobb had built an impressive career before his arrest.
His resume includes senior defense adviser to parliament level of Australia; 1999-2000 working on the crisis in East Timor; special director, strategic policy with the Royal Australian Air Force; chief strategist at Special Operations Command; and Associate Air War College strategy of the US Air Force instructor.
